After losing the Test series 1-3 on Australia tour, the biggest debate in Indian cricket is who will be the next Test captain? Due to poor form, Rohit Sharma decided to opt out of the Sydney Test, while Jasprit Bumrah took charge of the team in that match. However, due to workload and injuries, questions are being raised on Bumrah being made the captain. In such a situation, former Australia captain Adam Gilchrist has given his opinion regarding the next captain of India.
Is it a risk to give full-time captaincy to Jasprit Bumrah?
In the Club Prairie Fire Podcast, Adam Gilchrist said that it could be challenging for him to make Jasprit Bumrah the full-time captain. Gilchrist said:
“I don’t think Bumrah should be a full-time captain. “It may be a little difficult for them.”
He also added that he would not be surprised if the Indian team management decides to bring back Virat Kohli as captain.
“If they bring back Virat and give him the captaincy, I will not be surprised.”
Rohit Sharma’s future and England tour
Gilchrist also predicted that Rohit Sharma might not take part in India’s next Test series on the England tour in June 2025.
He said jokingly:
“I don’t think Rohit will go to England. When they reach home, the first thing they will meet is their two-month-old baby, whose nappy they will be responsible for changing. I think he will probably focus on the Champions Trophy and play limited overs cricket in England. After that he might be out of Test cricket.”
Will Virat Kohli come back?
Gilchrist hinted that bringing Virat Kohli back into the captaincy could be a possible option. Virat had earlier resigned from the captaincy, but his experience and leadership abilities can be beneficial for Team India.
India’s next test series: big challenges
India’s next Test series will be against England in June 2025. During this long gap, the Indian team will have to choose a captain who can balance and motivate the team.
Opinion on Gilchrist’s captaincy
Adam Gilchrist, himself a successful captain and player, suggested that the Indian team should consider experienced options. He talked about giving priority to 36-year-old experienced players.
