Mumbai: Kiran Rao’s film ‘Lapata Ladies’ and many scenes of the Arabic short film ‘Burka City’ released in 2019 have seen strange similarity. This has led to a debate as to whether the much ‘missing ladies’ is actually a copy of any other film.

However, the film’s producer Biplab Goswami has denied allegations of literary theft. He said that I had registered the script of this film in 2014 itself in the screenwriters Association. At that time, I registered the script in its compiled form. This Arabic film was not even made. Later, he registered a full-length script for a feature film in 2018. At that time, it was given the title ‘Two Brides’. He said that many writers around the world have written on the subject how people change due to mistakes and their scripts, characters and dialogues are all completely original.

Meanwhile, the producer of the original film Fabis Brees said in a statement that he was shocked after watching ‘Missing Ladies’.

The story has been molded to suit Indian culture, but many aspects of my short film remain intact. Conflict between two husbands, the story of a corrupt police officer, everything is the same.
