New Delhi: The electric vehicle industry is on the verge of achieving a new milestone. But the target of selling 20 lakh vehicles is still far away. According to vehicle data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, 19.40 lakh electric vehicles have been sold across the country till December 29 this year. From the year 2023, sales of electric vehicles have increased from 15 lakh to 26.5 percent.
The adoption rate of electric vehicles across the country has also increased from 6.39 percent in 2023 to 7.46 percent this year. This pace reflects the growth of electric vehicles.
Despite this growth in electric vehicles, petrol-powered vehicles continue to dominate the Indian market. Out of the total 2.60 crore vehicles sold so far this year, 1.91 crore i.e. 73.69 percent were petrol vehicles. The share of diesel vehicles in total vehicle sales was 10.05 percent i.e. 26.2 lakh. The remaining 9.87 percent was for vehicles running on petrol-CNG, hybrid and other fuels like CNG.
The year started on a strong note with sales of 1,45,064 vehicles in January and 1,41,740 vehicles in February. The highest sales of 2,13,068 vehicles took place in March, which is the first major increase of the year. However, sales declined in April and May. 1,40,659 vehicles were sold in the fifth month of the year. After this, the situation improved slightly in June and 1,40,137 vehicles were sold.
The second half of this year saw higher sales of electric vehicles. 2,19,482 electric vehicles were sold in October, the highest in any month of the year.
Sales were low in November and December. 1,92,575 vehicles were sold in November and 1,32,302 vehicles were sold till December 29. But this year more than 1 lakh vehicles were sold every month.
