New Delhi: A tragic case of financial distress led to suicide in Delhi’s Kailash Nagar, where 42-year-old Lalit Mohan Varshney was found dead after reportedly hanging himself. Before taking the extreme step, he recorded a video message, in which he accused financier Sanjay Jain of driving him to commit suicide due to an ever-increasing debt burden.
As per the video found on Varshney’s mobile phone, he had taken a loan of Rs 50,000 from Jain in 2014, which had ballooned to Rs 10 lakh despite years of regular interest payments. He alleged that Jain incessantly harassed him, threatening to create ruckus at his home and inform his family members about the debt. Struggling under the mounting financial pressure, Varshney revealed that he borrowed money from multiple sources to repay the interest but found himself caught in a never-ending cycle of debt.
“I have been paying interest for the last eight-nine years, but the amount is not reducing. I have no money left. I borrowed from different people just to keep up with the payments. But the interest keeps increasing,” he said in the video, expressing his helplessness.
He further added in the video, “I did not do anything wrong, I did not cheat. There is no reason to think that there is a girl in my life. I could not tell what went wrong with me and what is happening to me. Perhaps I will not be able to tell even today. You will know only when you watch this video after I am gone.”
According to a report by NDTV, the incident came to light on March 24 when Delhi’s Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital (LNJP) Hospital informed the Gandhi Nagar Police Station about Varshney’s death.
Poonam Gupta, the deceased’s wife, had admitted him to the hospital after she found him in an unconscious state. Varshney, who used to run a mobile repair shop in Kailash Nagar, left behind the incriminating video, holding Jain responsible for his demise.
Following Gupta’s complaint, the police registered a case of abetment to suicide against Jain, who operates a property dealing business under the name ‘Jain Property’ from the same area. The accused was subsequently arrested, and an investigation into the matter is currently underway.
