Delhi health authorities have issued an advisory in response to rising cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) and other respiratory viruses globally, particularly in China.

The directive emphasizes the need for medical facilities to keep detailed records of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and lab-confirmed influenza cases for effective monitoring.
Hospitals are advised to stock essential medications, including paracetamol, antihistamines, bronchodilators, and cough syrups, as well as oxygen for treatment of mild cases. It is mandatory for hospitals to report cases of Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and SARI via the Integrated Health Information Platform (IHIP). Strict protocols for isolation and universal precautions are required for suspected cases.
Preventive Measure
Despite the advisory triggered by reports from China, officials, including Dr. Vandana Bagga, have noted no significant increase in respiratory illnesses in India as of January 2, 2025. The Union Health Ministry reassured citizens against alarm while recommending typical preventive measures for respiratory diseases.
What Is HMPV?
HMPV affects the respiratory system, often causing mild to severe symptoms, primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets or contaminated surfaces. It can resemble COVID-19 in symptoms and transmission, posing greater risks for immunocompromised individuals, children, and the elderly. Severe complications may necessitate immediate medical care.
