Internet and voice-over-internet telephony services have been temporarily suspended in at least five gram panchayat areas in Sainthia town of Birbhum district of West Bengal. According to officials, this step has been taken with the aim of preventing rumors and illegal activities. The ban will be effective from March 14 (Friday) to 17 March (Monday).

The administration says that this decision was necessary to maintain peace in the area. The local administration has requested the people not to pay attention to any kind of rumors and cooperate with the administration. Although this ban will affect communication services, it is said to be mandatory for security reasons.

Security increased after stone pelting incident

Police force deployment has been increased after the recent stone pelting incident in Birbhum district. Under government order Telecom Act, 2023 According to any type of data-related messages have been temporarily banned, so that public arrangements are maintained and any criminal activity can be prevented.

What will be the restoration of service?

  • Voice calls and SMS services are not banned.
  • There has been no restriction on the publication and spread of newspapers, so that the flow of information and knowledge does not interrupt.

Internet and Voice-Over-Internet Telefony services have been suspended in the following sectors:

  • Sainthia city area
  • Hatora Gram Panchayat
  • Mathpalasa gram panchayat
  • Harisara Gram Panchayat
  • Dariapur gram panchayat
  • Phulur Gram Panchayat

The government order has clarified that internet services in these areas can be used to spread rumors and promote illegal activities in view of recent incidents. For this reason, these services have been temporarily suspended.
