Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi said India is going to finalize the deal to purchase three additional Scorpene submarines next month. He said the new Scorpene submarines will be built at Mazagon Dockyard in collaboration with the French Naval Group.

Meanwhile, ahead of Navy Day on Monday, Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi said India is going to finalize the deal to buy three additional Scorpene submarines next month. He said the new Scorpene submarines will be built at Mazagon Dockyard in collaboration with the French Naval Group.

The Navy Chief said that up to 60 percent indigenous material will be included in the new submarines. The strength of the Navy will increase manifold with the three submarines of the Scorpene class. As China is rapidly increasing its power in the sea, this Scorpene submarine will also increase India’s power and this will strengthen India’s security capability in the sea. Along with this, the naval activities of China and Pakistan will also be closely monitored. This submarine has been designed to incorporate the latest technology. It will feature an indigenous combat management system, which will enhance the operational capability of the submarine. The estimated cost of acquisition of these submarines is ₹40,000 crore (about $5 billion).

India’s strength in the sea will increase

India is continuously increasing its military capabilities. As such, the purchase of these submarines is part of India’s broader initiative to modernize its naval fleet and strengthen its deterrent capabilities at sea. The deal is expected to deepen the strategic defense partnership between India and France, which is especially important in view of growing maritime threats from regional rivals such as China and Pakistan.

In October, the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi allocated Rs. Rs 40,000 crore were sanctioned. The first of two 9,800 tonne nuclear powered attack submarines (SSNs) will be ready for induction by 2036-37. After a few years, other submarines will also be included.
