Indore (Madhya Pradesh): A 61-year-old Sagar man’s liver gave a new lease of life to a 44-year-old man here.

The liver transplant surgery was successfully performed at Choithram Hospital on Thursday afternoon.

The vital organs of Baliram Kushwaha, 61, who met with an accident and was shifted to the Super Speciality Hospital (SSH) in Jabalpur, were harvested after he was declared brain dead. Kushwaha’s heart was airlifted to Bhopal and transplanted in a patient at AIIMS, Bhopal. His liver was airlifted to Indore and transported to Choithram Hospital through a green corridor on Thursday.

Dr Anil Kuman Lakhwani, deputy director, Choithram Hospital, said, “The 44-year-old patient was suffering from chronic liver disease and was in regular follow-up with the doctors in our hospital. His transplant was successful.”

A team of doctors led by Dr Ajay Jain performed the transplant. Baliram Kushwaha, resident of Kanera Ground, Sagar, was admitted to Super Speciality Hospital NSCB, Jabalpur on January 22 with severe head injury. He was declared brain dead at 01:30 PM on Wednesday by a team of four doctors under The Transplant of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOA) rules, 2014 and his second confirmatory medical examination, including apnea test for brain stem death, was performed at 8:00 PM.

Kushwaha’s grandson took decision to donate his organs

Harinarayan Patel, grandson of the deceased Baliram Kushwaha, decided to donate the vital organs of his grandfather. Earlier, the kidneys and heart were allocated to Bhopal but the kidneys could not be donated due to technical reasons. His liver was allocated to Indore as it could not be utilised in Bhopal.

“It is a milestone achieved by the state in organ donation and transplantation. Donor of Jabalpur gave new lease of life to two different patients in Bhopal and Indore. It will boost the organ donation efforts across the state.”
