Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the highly anticipated Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav 2024 at 3 PM today (December 6). This Mahotsav is a vibrant three-day event celebrating the unique cultural, social, and economic contributions of Northeast India. This flagship initiative is a tribute to the region’s significance as the ‘Ashtalakshmi’ or the eight forms of prosperity.

This year, Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav is scheduled to take place from December 6 to December 8 at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. Keep reading to know everything you can witness at this three-day cultural carnival.

What can you expect at Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav 2024?

Initiated by the Ministry of Development of the North-East Region, with support from the Ministry of Communication, the Mahotsav aims to strengthen economic collaboration, promote cultural exchange, and advance sustainable development across the eight Northeastern states.

The event will feature thematic exhibitions, interactive state-specific pavilions, and focused discussions to explore investment opportunities in textiles, agriculture, tourism, and handicrafts.

Art and interactive features

According to the official site statement, more than 300 artisans and artists from the region will bring the cultural essence of Northeast India to life. Live demonstrations of traditional crafts, a Geographical Indication (GI) product zone, and dedicated spaces showcasing Eri and Muga silk will provide visitors with the region’s rich heritage.

In addition to handicrafts, a digital selfie area and a youth-focused, technology-enabled engagement zone are also set for younger audiences. Additionally, a dedicated food court will offer authentic Northeastern delicacies, allowing visitors to experience the culinary diversity of the region.

Fashion and cultural performance

The Mahotsav will feature a stunning fashion showcase blending contemporary design with traditional textiles like Muga silk and Eri silk. Renowned designers from the region will collaborate with local artisans to present exquisite ensembles, highlighting the global potential of Northeastern textiles. Further, discussions on sustainable fashion and the future of handloom will provide valuable insights into the industry’s evolution.

Daily cultural performances, including Assam’s spirited Bihu dances and Nagaland’s dynamic war dances, will also be showcased at the event.

Reportedly, the event is expected to push the economy, with an expected Rs 2 crore in on-spot sales and over 50 bulk orders projected for artisans and entrepreneurs. The event will provide a platform for collaboration between government representatives, industry leaders, and entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in textiles, agriculture, and tourism.

Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav 2024: date and timings

The Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav 2024 will open to the public at 5:30 PM on December 6, with extended visiting hours from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM on December 7 and December 8. Entry is free, encouraging widespread participation in this celebration of Northeast India’s vibrant culture and economic potential.
