Daryl Mitchell dives at second slip to take the catch. | (Credits: Screen

New Zealand middle-order batter Daryl Mitchell plucked a screamer to get the better of Joe Root on day one of the second Test against England at the Basin Reserve at the Wellington. The right-handed batter flew to his right and grabbed a stunner as Nathan Smith dismissed the ace batter for the second time in the series.

The dismissal occurred in the 11th over of the innings as Smith came on to bowl his second. With the ball producing an extra bounce outside off-stump, Root fiddled at it, but only got an edge. Although Mitchell seemed a tad late on the ball, he managed to snaffle the ball and nonchalantly toss it up in celebration.

Here’s the video of the same:

Harry Brook scores hundred but England put up an underwhelming total on the board:

Brook, who starred with an enterprising 171 in the opening Test at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, plundered his eighth hundred in the format. Along with Ollie Pope, the Yorkshire batter added 174 runs to help the tourists recover from 43-4.

However, the lower-order batters failed, much like their top-order, thereby losing their last four wickets for 21 runs. England were eventually bowled out for 280 in an innings that lasted only 54.4 overs. England lead the three-Test series as they emerged victorious in the opening game by eight wickets.

While England are out of the World Test Championship final contention, New Zealand are in contention, but they must win the last two matches.
