Will Pune Have Water Cuts? From Khadakwasla to Panshet: Current Water Levels In Dams Supplying City And Pimpri Chinchwad | FP
As summer approaches Pune with heightened temperatures, the demand for water is expected to surge in the city. Meanwhile, the quartet of dams supplying water to Pune is currently at 40.43% capacity, compared to 37.62% in 2024, as of April 10.
The water levels are depleting fast, as it was at 53.40% on March 11.
Official records reveal that the cumulative water storage of the Khadakwasla reservoir stands at 53.78% as of April 10.
Panshet reservoir is at 39.87%, while Temghar stands at 10.21%. Additionally, the Warasgaon dam stands at 47.56% capacity.
While Pavna’s water level lies at 42.18% and Kasarsai at 35.93%, Mulshi stands at 41.70%.
Will Pune see watercuts?
Residents of Pune are dealing with shortened water delivery hours and poor pressure, even though the Canal Advisory Committee promised there would be no water shortages or supply cuts in the city. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) appears to have instituted an unauthorized water curtailment, which is causing concern. It is difficult to save water regularly since residents from various localities have complained about weaker water flow and shorter supply durations. Residents of Kothrud and Erandwane are dealing with decreased water pressure and fewer hours of supply. Water was previously provided until nine in the morning, but it is now cut off at eight.
Low pressure is making it difficult for residents in Gokhalenagar, Janwadi, and Wadarwadi to fill water storage tanks. Although water is provided from 8 PM to 1 AM, homeowners must remain up late to get enough water because of the low pressure, which prevents storage tanks from filling up.
Pipeline bursts
In addition to lower water pressure concerns, frequent pipeline bursts are causing major disruptions in the water supply in Pune. In just the past five months, at least five major leaks have occurred, impacting thousands of residents during the peak summer season.
The pipeline connected to Dandekar Bridge, which delivers water from the Parvati Water Purification Centre to areas like Apte Road, Ghole Road, Jangali Maharaj Road, and Fergusson College Road, is among the most severely affected, experiencing frequent breaks.
These pipelines suffer breaks as they have turned old, and ongoing development work is also causing pipeline bursts in some areas.
