Cuffe Parade residents put up a spectacular kite show on Sunday evening to mark makar sankranti which was celebrated on January 14.

The show, held at the Bay View Marine Garden, attracted kite enthusiasts from across the city who came to fly kites and watch dazzling specimens course the skies. As the sun went down, kites fitted with LED lights brightened the cool evening sky.

Makar sankranti which marks the transition of the sun to the zodiac sign of capricorn, or makar, is also the time when the sun moves from south to north. The day is celebrated in different ways, including the flying of kites whose journeys symbolise the sun’s journey.

Kite flyers had taken part in an event at the garden on January 14. However, the Cuffe Parade Residents Association (CPRA) which organised Sunday’s event, decided to hold a bigger event during the weekend. “We do not allow food into the garden, but everybody distributed til-gul (a sweet that is made during the festival),” said Laura D’Souza, president of CPRA.

As a nod to the safety of birds and animals, the organisers did not allow participants to use nylon string to fly the kites. Nylon strings have caused severe injuries and even deaths of people and animals. The string is banned but there have been violation of the rules.
