Ligue 1’s social media team hit back at Cristiano Ronaldo following his recent criticism of the league by bringing Lionel Messi into the debate. Ligue 1’s official Spanish language X account responded to what Ronaldo said about French football and why he thinks the Saudi Pro League is tougher, with a post referencing Messi’s win in sweltering conditions at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

What did Cristiano Ronaldo say about French Ligue One?

Ronaldo recently reiterated his stand that the Saudi Pro League was better than the French Ligue One. Durign an interview at the Globe Soccer Awards earlier this week, Ronaldo said: “Saudi League is better than Ligue 1. France only has PSG. The rest are finished. Try to sprint in 38, 39, 40 degree weather and see…It is difficult to become champion in Saudi. This year Al-Hilal are better, Al-Ittihad are top of the league, but I believe that we have to push hard to be champions. I’ve been champion everywhere I have [played] and I believe I will be champion [in Saudi Arabia].”

What’s next for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo?

While Lionel Messi enjoys an off-season following Inter Miami’s 2024 campaign, where the club secured the MLS Supporters’ Shield but fell short in the MLS Cup playoffs, Cristiano Ronaldo is in the midst of the 2024-25 season with Al-Nassr. The team currently sits fourth in the league table after 13 matches, trailing leaders Al-Ittihad by 11 points. Al-Nassr suffered a crucial defeat to Al-Ittihad in early December, their final game before the ongoing break. League action is set to resume on January 9, with Al-Nassr hosting Al-Akhdoud.
