Australia defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 242 runs in the first Test played in Gaul to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Australia declared their first innings on the second day by scoring 654 runs for six wickets. After this, the Sri Lankan team, facing a follow -on, scored 165 runs in the first innings and 247 runs in the second innings.

 

Usman Khwaja, who scored a double century, was declared the Player of the Match. Sri Lanka has suffered the biggest defeat on its home ground. Earlier in 2017, he suffered a defeat against India by an innings and 239 runs. Sri Lankan’s biggest defeat against Australia includes a shift in 2012 by an innings and 201 runs in Melbourne and in 1988 by innings and 108 runs at Waka Ground. Overall, the biggest defeat Sri Lankan team received in 2001 in Cape Town by an innings and 229 runs from South Africa. In the second innings of Sri Lanka, Nathan Leon and Matthew Kuhman took four wickets each.
