Police in Khar have arrested a 19-year-old caretaker and her boyfriend for allegedly stealing 1.2 kilos of gold jewellery from the house where she worked.

The duo reportedly planned the theft to finance their wedding.

The caretaker was caught after she posted photos on Instagram wearing the stolen jewellery. Her boyfriend, who also posted pictures wearing a stolen gold chain, was arrested from Uttar Pradesh.

Mahima Nagendra Nishad is a resident of Santacruz, while her boyfriend Rajnish Shivdhan Arya, 20, hails from Bhasma village in Gorakhpur.

The police have recovered 70% of the stolen gold from the couple.

The complaint was filed by a woman from a business family living in Khar (West). According to the police, the theft occurred between May and October 20, during which Nishad was employed as a caretaker at a senior citizen’s house. Nishad had been recommended for the job by her sister, who worked as a therapist for the same family.

Nishad joined as a caretaker in May and began stealing jewellery from the house. She passed on the stolen items to her boyfriend, Arya. Police revealed that the couple, in a relationship for two years, conspired to steal the jewellery to fund their wedding. Nishad quit her job on October 20 and started working elsewhere. However, on November 3, she uploaded photos on Instagram wearing gold rings, which the complainant identified as stolen property.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered at Khar Police Station on November 7.

During interrogation, Nishad confessed to stealing the gold between May and October and admitted to handing it over to Arya in Uttar Pradesh. An official said: “We arrested Nishad from Santacruz. She was released on bail but disclosed during the investigation that she had handed over all the stolen jewellery to Arya. Our team traced Arya to Uttar Pradesh and arrested him. The stolen items were recovered from him.”
