Chandigarh. Creating a new history in the country, Indian Railways has announced to launch the first hydrogen train in Haryana in January 2025. This state-of-the-art train, which will be completely pollution free, will cover a distance of 90 kilometers between Sonipat and Jind. This initiative not only reflects technological advancement but is also a major step towards environmental protection.
World’s most powerful hydrogen train of 1200 horsepower
The specialty of this hydrogen train is its capacity of 1200 horsepower, which makes it the most powerful hydrogen train in the world. This train will run at a maximum speed of 140 kilometers per hour and will have 8 to 10 coaches. Its fuel efficiency is also noteworthy:
- 1 kg hydrogen provides mileage equivalent to 4.5 liters of diesel.
- Unlike conventional diesel trains, which emit 964 kg of carbon in a 90 km journey, this train will emit only water vapour.
Hydrogen plant being built at Jind railway station
To meet the requirements of the hydrogen train, a special hydrogen storage plant is being built at Jind railway station.
- This plant will have the capacity to store 3000 kg hydrogen.
- Rainwater collected on the roofs of the station will be used in hydrogen production.
Fourth country in the world and India’s biggest achievement
India has become the fourth country in the world to develop hydrogen train. While hydrogen trains from other countries have a capacity of 600-700 horsepower, this train from India is setting a new global benchmark with 1200 horsepower.
Future plans of Railways:
- Over the next three years heritage and mountain routes such as:
- Matheran Hill Railway
- Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
- Kalka-Shimla Railway
- Kangra Valley Railway
- Nilgiri Mountain Railway
There is a plan to run 30 hydrogen trains.
Boxes being prepared in Chennai
The coaches of this project are being manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory, Chennai. The design and interior of the train has been prepared keeping in mind the comfort and modernity of the passengers.
Environment and tourism will get a boost
The biggest advantage of the hydrogen train project is that it will make a significant contribution to environmental protection. as well as:
- Passengers will get comfortable, economical and modern travel options.
- It will also help in taking tourism in the region to new heights.
