Controversy has arisen over Houston University (UH) course ‘Live Hindu Religion’. Vasant Bhatt, a student of Indian origin, filed a complaint in this course accusing Hinduism of incorrectly presenting. On this, the university, citing academic freedom, said that teachers are free to consider complex and challenging topics.
University statement
The University of Houston said in an official statement,
“We respect academic freedom and give teachers freedom in their syllabus. The university does not normally review personal lectures, but ensures that all courses meet educational standards.”
The director of the Dean and the Department of Religious Studies reviewed the issue and discussed this with Professor Aaron Michael Ulri. The university clarified that this course is based on the educational discipline of religious study and analyzes various religions such as Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism.
Why did the dispute happen?
Indian -origin student Vasant Bhatt alleged that the course depicted Hinduism as a weapon against Islam and an attempt to deny its antiquity. He complained to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, after which the matter is being reviewed.
This syllabus of the university is available to students online, in which video lectures of Professor Aaron Michael Ulri are given weekly. The university clarified that the use of educational words is different from public or political context, which can sometimes cause misconceptions.
It will now be seen whether the university takes any other step on this dispute or not.
