BMC speeds up road concretisation work across Mumbai ahead of May 31 deadline | X – @mybmc
Mumbai: Mumbai is undergoing extensive road concretisation work and the BMC is at the receiving end of the criticism for digging up the city. Moreover, as the BMC has set up a deadline of May 31 to complete all the on-going works, the engineers and contractors are racing up to make all the roads motorable before monsoon.
On this lines, the BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani conveyed a meeting with senior civic officials and engineers and advised to take the criticism positively. ‘The BMC is been criticised from all sides as the city is dug up for road concretisation. Take the criticism as an opportunity to ensure quality of work,’ told the officers in the review on Friday.
In a way to make the roads in Mumbai potholes free, the BMC has undertaken a massive project of concreting all roads in the city. Total of nine contractors are appointed to complete the works. So far, BMC has completed concreting 1,333 km of roads. Remaining roads are undertaken in two phases- 698 road works (324 km) in the first phase and 1,420 roads (377 km) in phase two.
It was highlighted that road concretisation in Eastern suburbs is moving at a slower pace than expected, while some contractors are digging already concretised roads. The BMC had instructed the contractors to not dig up the concretised roads and complete all necessary underground utilities work before concreting. Alongwith this the citizens have also complained that several under-construction sites are not barricaded, risking the pedestrians and motorists’ safety.
‘Strict actions should be taken if contractors are not following the SOPs like barracading, covering with green cloth, layering with thermoplastic after leveling among others. While the contractors have to ensure work completed following all procedures within given time limit,” Gagrani said.
Additional Municipal commissioner Abhijit Bangar had recently directed BMC engineers to be present at the spot while work is undertaken and told senior officers to conduct regular inspections. Bangar himself carried surprised visits at construction sites lately ensuring quality work is carried.
