Retail inflation in India decreased from 6.21 per cent in October to 5.48 per cent in November 2024, according to government data released on Thursday. Rural areas experienced an inflation rate of 5.95 per cent in November, while urban areas experienced a lower rate of 4.83 per cent.

According to the release, a slowdown in price increases in the ‘food and beverages’ category was the main cause of the inflation decline.

Food prices index

In November, the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), which tracks changes in food prices, dropped to 9.04 per cent from higher readings in earlier months. In October 2023 it was 10.87 per cent, and in November 2023 it was 8.70 per cent.

Housing inflation, which is only measured in urban areas, increased marginally from 2.81 per cent in October to 2.87 per cent in November.

CPI head line

From an average of 3.6 per cent in July and August to 5.5 per cent in September and 6.2 per cent in October 2024, the CPI-based headline inflation rate rose to its highest level in over a year since September 2023.

Vegetables inflation

Vegetables, pulses, sugar, fruits, eggs, milk, and personal care items all saw decreases in inflation year over year. However, foods like cauliflower, potatoes, and garlic continued to be the main causes of inflation, with garlic prices rising 85.14 per cent over the prior year.

Decerease in inflation during november

‘In the subgroups of vegetables, pulses and products, sugar and confectionery, fruits, eggs, milk and products, spices, transportation and communication, and personal care and effects, there was a notable decrease in inflation during the month of November 2024,’ the National Statistics Office stated.
