Mumbai: The Government of India is considering lifting the ban on laptops, servers and computer imports keeping in mind the possibility of change in global trade equations in view of the tariff war.
The government wants the manufacturer to follow the domestic production commitments made under the production-long scheme.
It is believed that laptops and IT hardware equipment and parts manufacturers have also discussed their new plans with the government to increase the price of domestic production.
Sources said that the plan was discussed to increase local production and to get local production at the local level.
The US has criticized India for not consulting stakeholders before planning to ban laptops and free imports of related goods. However, India has currently postponed the scheme.
India had announced in August 2023 that it would ban free imports of laptops, tablets, computers and related goods. However, the government had to postpone this decision due to protests against this announcement and instead, the import management system standard was implemented in October 2023, under which it was made mandatory for IT hardware companies to register and give information about imports to them. This standard has been extended to 31 December, 2025. American exporters expressed concern over lack of prior consultation with stakeholders.
