A memorial will be built at the National Memorial in memory of former President of the country and senior Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee. This information was shared by Pranab Mukherjee’s daughter Sharmistha Mukherjee and she expressed her gratitude to the Central Government for this. Sharmistha said, “This is a commendable decision in honor of my father, for which I am thankful to the government.”
In the last week of December, discussions also began regarding where his memorial would be built for former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. According to reports, the National Memorial site and Vijay Ghat have been surveyed, and the process of finalizing one of these two places is underway.

Rules for construction of monuments at National Memorial site
In 2013, the UPA government had made a policy, under which after the death of the Prime Minister, President and Vice President, only the National Memorial was decided as the place for their memorials.
- Under this policy, it has been decided to build Pranab Mukherjee’s memorial at the National Memorial.
- The Samadhi of Giani Zail Singh has been built in this complex near Ekta Sthal.
Controversy over Manmohan Singh’s funeral
After the death of Manmohan Singh, there was controversy regarding his last rites.
- His last rites were performed at Nigam Bodh Ghat, to which Congress objected.
- Congress’s demand was that the last rites of the former Prime Minister should be held at the same place where his memorial was built.
What will be the location of Manmohan Singh’s memorial?
- There is a high possibility of construction at the National Memorial site.
- The government’s decision is being awaited, but it is clear from Minister Khattar’s statement that this process is being taken forward rapidly.
