Chandigarh: Haryana police on Monday arrested Congress worker Himani Narwal “friend’’ for her murder.
It may be recalled that Himani’s body was found stuffed in a suitcase near Rohtak district’s Sampla town bus stand on Saturday.
Stating that the accused Sachin, 30, who runs a mobile shop in Jhajjar, was arrested from Mundka area of Delhi, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Rohtak Range, Krishan Kumar Rao, said the accused and the deceased had got in touch with each other through social media about a year and half ago and were “friends” since the past about eight months.
Stating that Sachin used to frequently meet Himani, 29, at her house in Vijay Nagar, Rohtak, where she lived alone, ADGP Rao said her mother lived in Delhi with Himani’s brother Jatin.
On February 28, Sachin came to Himani’s house and they got into a quarrel over “some financial dispute’’ and he strangled her with a mobile charger cable, the ADGP said and added that Sachin took her jewellery, phone, laptop on her Scooty to his shop in Jhajjar and returned to her house around 10 pm. He then packed her body in a suitcase kept in the house and took it in an auto-rickshaw and dumped it in the bushes near Sampla bus stand.
On being asked about the nature of “financial dispute”, the ADGP said that he could not divulge information about it as the same was still being verified. “There were also financial transactions between them and we will also verify that in interrogation. Sachin was presented before Rohtak court where he was sent to three-day police remand.”
To another question, he said Sachin, who lived in Jhajjar, was already married and his family was not aware of the deceased.
Himani’s mother Savita had on Sunday held that her daughter was an active worker of Congress for the past 10 years and had also participated in “Bharat Jodo Yatra’’ led by Rahul Gandhi. She held that the growing popularity of Himani could have been a reason behind her murder.
According to family members, while Jatin’s elder brother Kuldeep was murdered in 2011, their father had also passed away a few years later.
