New Delhi: The Congress is set to launch its nationwide ‘Save Constitution’ yatra from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, coinciding with an All India Congress Committee (AICC) session on April 8-9. While the yatra will target the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on a national scale, Congress will also set stage for its campaign for the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections.
Following its role in the Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) defeat in the recent Delhi Assembly elections, Congress is expected to independently contest the 2027 Gujarat Assembly elections. In the 2024 national elections, the two parties had formed an alliance, with Congress contesting 24 Lok Sabha seats and the AAP contesting two in the state.
Jagdish Thakor, a member of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) told ETV Bharat, “There was no benefit to the Congress in contesting the national elections jointly with the AAP in Lok Sabha polls. We would like to go alone in the 2027 Assembly elections and regain lost ground.”
Party sources also stated that in 2017, Rahul Gandhi, then the party chief and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched an aggressive campaign that nearly helped Congress form a government in Gujarat. However, the party faced a setback in the 2022 Assembly elections when AAP, in its debut, took away around 13% of Congress’s votes. Thakor, a former Gujarat Congress chief, stated, “They indirectly helped the BJP.”
As per the report, AICC functionary Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka also confirmed that the upcoming AICC session in April will emphasize Congress’s commitment to Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals and will also serve as a platform to engage with voters in Gujarat
Ulaka further stated that the upcoming AICC session will focus on key decisions for rebuilding the party ahead of the 2025 elections.
Who Will Attend the AICC Session?
The upcoming AICC session will see participation from a range of prominent Congress leaders, including former opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former party chief Sonia Gandhi, senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and the entire Congress Working Committee.
Additionally, all AICC functionaries, state unit chiefs, and the three Chief Ministers—K Siddaramaiah from Karnataka, Revanth Reddy from Telangana, and Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu from Himachal Pradesh—are expected to attend.
