Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): In a strongly-worded statement, Santosh Singh Gautam, spokesperson of Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) and media in-charge of Ujjain, condemned Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) for hoisting a tattered national flag at its headquarters.

The act, Gautam emphasised, is a clear violation of the Flag Code of India, 2002 which explicitly states that a damaged or soiled national flag cannot be flown.

He said that despite repeated verbal notifications by Rajendra Kuwal, Congress corporator and deputy leader of the opposition in the UMC, no action was taken by concerned officials. Kuwal was compelled to file a written complaint with the Commissioner of Ujjain.

The entire incident, Gautam asserted, reeks of a deliberate attempt to disrespect the national flag. He demanded immediate action against those responsible emphasising that respecting the National Flag is a collective responsibility of all citizens.

Gautam also criticised UMC officials for allegedly working in line with the ideology of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which he claimed, has a history of disrespecting the national flag. He cited the fact that the RSS headquarters did not hoist the National Flag for 55 years after Independence, reflecting the organisation’s and the BJP’s true stance on the National Flag.
