The Congress has suffered a major setback in Karnal before the civic elections to be held on 2 March in Haryana. About 50 Congress leaders joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini and BJP state president Mohan Lal Baroli were also present on the occasion. Prominent leaders who join the BJP include former chairperson of Haryana Minorities Commission Trilochan Singh, former Congress District President Ashok Khurana, former chairperson of Karnal Municipal Corporation and many former councilors including Balwinder Kalra. Apart from this, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Bindal, Congress’s OBC Cell District President Sanjay Chandel also joined BJP.

BJP stronghold in Karnal and stir in Congress

Karnal seat is considered a strong stronghold of BJP, and this defection of Congress leaders has shocked the party. BJP has nominated Renu Bala Gupta from here as mayor candidate. On this occasion, Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini said,
“We welcome all the leaders who joined the BJP. Your support will increase our strength and we will serve the public with full devotion. ”

These Congress leaders leaving the party have created a stir in the organization. Some party leaders say that there was dissatisfaction among the workers after former deputy mayor Manoj Wadhwa being nominated by the Congress. He was not being liked, and that is why many leaders have resigned.

Congress leaders tried to convince, but failed

After reports of leaving the Congress, senior party leaders tried to meet disgruntled leaders. Even Congress Mayor Candidate Manoj Wadhwa himself came to convince the rebels, but his efforts failed. The leaders clearly stated that they would join the BJP, and took membership of the BJP in the event held after noon.

Trilochan Singh said,
“I have joined the BJP, because the Congress has now deviated from the issues of public interest.”
He thanked the Congress leadership, saying that the party had given him a chance to contest elections twice and become the chairman of the Minorities Commission, but now the situation has changed.

“Trilochan Singh has stabbed my back. He was with me until he filed nomination, but changed the next day. ”

Beneficial for BJP, big loss for Congress

Many Congress leaders going to BJP in Karnal can prove to be an election lead for BJP. For the Congress, this civic is a major setback before the elections, due to which the split within the party is clearly visible. Now it has to be seen whether the Congress will be able to make up for this loss or the BJP will get further strength.
