Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): There is ongoing discussion about widening of around 10 roads in the city and approval has already been received for about 6 roads at the government level. In the city’s urban development plan, the width of these roads ranges from 50 feet to 80 feet.
If such wide roads are constructed in the old city area, it could result in significant losses for residents, including damage to their buildings, shops, residential and commercial properties. Many building owners might even face the possibility of becoming homeless.
Mukesh Bhati, president of City Congress Committee and Ravi Rai, Leader of Opposition in Ujjain Municipal Corporation, have urged the government, administration and elected representatives of the city to consider the interests of residents and reduce the width of the roads. Road widening should be carried out with this in mind.
The issue requires serious consideration. Roads are being widened in anticipation of Simhastha Mahaparv 2028, but the work will only be for two months. The Simhastha area is located outside the city and only the roads in that area should be widened. In the plan for residential camps for saints, the roads can be made wider if needed. Bhati and Rai also emphasised that city residents should be compensated according to provisions of the Municipal Corporation Act.
Just as the owners of buildings evacuated under Mahakal plan were provided with compensation and alternative locations, the residents of other roads in the city should also be given compensation for the loss they will incur.
