Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Congress has filed a petition in the Madhya Pradesh principal bench of high court in Jabalpur seeking disqualification of MLA Nirmala Sapre from the Assembly. Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar also has been made respondent in the case, said people aware of the development on Thursday.

Congress has been seeking disqualification of Sapre, MLA from Bina constituency, who had defected to the BJP during Lok Sabha election. She had contested 2023 Assembly election on Congress ticket and won the seat but she later joined the BJP in presence of chief minister Mohan Yadav in a programme in Sagar.

Officially, Sapre is still Congress MLA as she has not yet resigned from her membership in the state assembly. Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar said that he had filed a petition against the MLA in July in front of the speaker Narendra Singh Tomar. Since then the Speaker has not taken any decision on it and so the only way left to get justice is to move the court. Thus a petition has been filed in the high court, he added.

MLA, Speaker (post), Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar and principal secretary (Assembly) have been made respondents in the case. The Court has accepted the petition, but the hearing date has not been announced yet.
