New Delhi, 18 November (HS). Prime Minister Narendra Modi today welcomed Brazil’s initiative to establish a global coalition against hunger and poverty, saying the Global South has been badly affected by food, fuel and fertilizer crises arising from ongoing conflicts in the world. In such a situation, we should give priority to the concerns of these developing countries.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the inaugural session of the G-20 Summit on ‘Social Inclusion and the Fight against Hunger and Poverty’ in Brazil today.
In it, the Prime Minister highlighted the steps taken by India to strengthen food security in Africa and elsewhere. He further emphasized that India’s G-20 Presidency’s call for “One Earth, One Family, One Future” is being echoed in the talks in Rio.
The Prime Minister thanked President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for hosting the Summit and his warm hospitality. He praised Brazil’s G20 agenda focused on the Sustainable Development Goals, saying this approach highlighted the concerns of the Global South and advanced the people-centric decisions of the New Delhi G20 Summit.
Speaking about India’s initiatives to tackle hunger and poverty, the Prime Minister said India has lifted 250 million people out of poverty in the last ten years and is distributing free food grains to 800 million people in the country. Regarding India’s success in tackling food security, the Prime Minister emphasized that its approach based on ‘back to basics and march to the future’ is yielding results. She elaborated on the measures taken by India to promote women-led development.
