The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has shown seriousness about increasing porn and violent content on digital platforms. Expressing concern over the misuse of freedom of expression, review of the existing media laws has been started.

Increased demand for strict rules

MPs, National Commission for Women and the general public have objected to increasing vulgarity and violence in digital content. The Supreme Court and many High Courts have also discussed this subject. In such a situation, the government is considering to make the existing laws more effective and bring new strict laws.

Strict action will be taken on violation of rules

  • The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has directed the age-based classification of content and strict adherence to guidelines under IT Rule-2021.
  • The OTT and social media platforms have been asked to follow the guidelines of self-control and take action on violation of the code of conduct.
  • According to the ministry, some digital platforms are showing obscene and improper material, on which MPs and statutory organizations have lodged objections.

Steps towards new legal structure

The Ministry is intensively discussing the issue and will prepare a proposal and send it to the concerned committee. Earlier, guidelines were issued to the OTT platforms to transmit content according to laws.
