New Delhi: More than 40 percent of sedan cars sold in India are now CNG cars as consumers increasingly prefer the cleaner fuel. CNG sedan cars are the first choice of consumers compared to petrol and diesel vehicles.
Data from Global Data and Analytics shows that CNG adoption has increased steadily over the last few years. Its share has increased from only 10.8 percent in 2021 to 41.5 percent in 2024. In contrast, petrol cars have lost consumer preference. Its share has decreased from 82 percent in 2021 to 55.5 percent in 2024. Its share in diesel has also declined from 6.5 percent in 2021 to 1.1 percent in 2024.
The share of taxis is very high among sedans. In the taxi segment, popular models like Hyundai Aura, Tata Tigor and Maruti Dezire have contributed to the growth of compact sedans. The data shows that the share of compact sedans in the overall sedan segment is expected to increase from 68 percent in 2021 to 74.6 percent in 2024.
In contrast, the share of mid-sedans (primarily used as personal cars like Honda City, Maruti Ciaz and Volkswagen Vertis) has declined from 26.2 per cent in 2021 to 20.2 per cent now.
Overall, the sedan category has lost share in the country’s passenger vehicle market as consumers increasingly prefer sports utility vehicles. The data shows that the share of the sedan segment has declined from 10.05 percent in 2021 to 8.3 percent in 2024.
