New Delhi: The newly-formed BJP government in Delhi, on Wednesday, April 9, revoked 177 political appointments made during the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s tenure. The cancellation, announced via an official order by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, will be effective immediately and target positions across several key government-affiliated boards, committees, and academies.
Appointments Scrapped Over ‘Political Motives’
As per the order issued by the Delhi government, the appointments have been annulled on grounds that they were made for “political gain” rather than administrative merit. According to a report by Times Now, many of these nominations involved current and former AAP MLAs, ministers’ family members, and senior party officials, who were placed in influential roles across bodies such as the Delhi Jal Board, Haj Committee, and various other language academies.
Among the prominent figures affected are AAP MLA Pawan Rana, who had been appointed chairman of the Delhi Jal Board, and MLA Vinay Mishra, who served as its vice-chairman. Preeti Tomar, wife of former AAP minister Jitendra Tomar, was also a member of the same board. Former MLAs Abdul Rehman and Haji Yunus held posts in the Delhi Haj Committee, while Jarnail Singh was vice-chairman of the Punjabi Academy.
BJP’s Statement
The BJP-led administration defended the move as necessary to restore transparency within governance structures. “These appointments were politically motivated and compromised the autonomy of crucial institutions,” a senior official told Times Now. The government maintained that the move is in line with its policy of ensuring non-partisan functioning of state agencies and bodies.
Sources further indicated that future appointments will be subjected to stricter scrutiny, with merit and professional expertise taking precedence over political affiliation.
