Chief Justice (CJI) Sanjeev Khanna of the country said that the importance of criminal laws in the society cannot be underestimated. He hoped that young lawyers would make criminal cases their first choice.
CJI Khanna on Thursday, former Chief Justice U.U. The book ‘Ratanlal and Dhirjalaj Law of Crime: A Compassive Commentary of Justice 2023’ edited by Lalit were speaking on the occasion of release.
The program was organized in the auditorium of Delhi High Court, in which former CJI U.U. Lalit, Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Attorney General R.K. Venkataramani and other judges of the Supreme Court and the High Court were present.

CJI Khanna: Criminal law affects personal freedom and social balance
CJI Sanjeev Khanna said in his address that in matters related to arrest and custody, criminal law directly affects personal freedom, social harmony and balance between power and civil rights of the state.
He also said that young lawyers are not getting attracted to criminal cases, while most cases in district courts are of criminal nature.
CJI Khanna said:
“When I look at the students and new lawyers of the law, many of them do not choose criminal cases as a career. But the truth is that the most cases in district courts are criminal. Therefore, we should not underestimate the importance of criminal law. I am confident that in the coming time, young lawyers will make criminal law their first choice instead of compulsion. ”
CJI Khanna shared his experience
CJI Sanjeev Khanna shared a memorable experience in the Delhi High Court as Additional Public Prosecutor (Additional Public Prosecutor).
He said:
“Once I was surprised when a criminal came to my house and he called me ‘thank you’. This was an experience that gave me satisfaction. “
CJI Khanna said that this criminal was the person against whom he fought a case on behalf of the state. But later he also worked for the same person as Amicus Curiae.
He said:
“This is the thing that earns a criminal lawyer – respect and satisfaction. This satisfaction probably does not get a civil lawyer or even a constitutional lawyer. ”
Criminal law will now be based on evidence and data
CJI Khanna said that the judicial system is now adopting evidence -based view in criminal laws.
He said:
“Now criminal jurisprudence will not depend only on behavior and social perceptions. It will be mostly based on data and analytical devices. We need to pursue the criminal law on the basis of evidence and concrete facts. ”
U.U. Lalit and Delhi High Court CJI D.K. Upadhyay’s opinion
Former CJI UU Lalit said that several levels have been investigated to prepare this book. He said:
“This is my first attempt, but it cannot be final.”
Chief Justice of Delhi High Court D.K. Upadhyay shared his views on the enactment of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS).
He said:
“The judicial system should be accessible, skilled and sensitive to the changing needs of society.”
