Woman pays ₹600 per month to use office washroom as her rented ‘home’ | Douyin via SCMP
It is not easy to handle rents and long bills when you are young and in the early stage of career. Having a very basic salary, it gets challenging to live a comfortable life all by yourself. At 18, a Chinese woman surnamed Yang could only afford living in a washroom.
The unconventional case of this teenager staying in the office washroom to avoid renting a flat or a room has gone viral on Chinese social media platform, Douyin. After working in the day, she rests in the toilet space of her company in the night time.
Restroom becomes ‘home’ at night
She would have never imagined her financial struggle would lead her calling a restroom her home. But with her limited salary, she has no other choice. Every night, after a long day working in a furniture store in Zhuzhou, Hunan province, she stayed inside a six-square-metre toilet area.
Originally from a rural family in Hubei province, Yang moved to the city in search of better opportunities. Reportedly, with a monthly salary of just 2,700 yuan, she could only afford this space as her shelter, with a monthly rent of 50 yuan (Approx. Rs. 600).
It’s not ideal place to settle in, but it’s what she can afford with basics.
More details
Visuals posted on Douyin suggest her living space consists of a sink and two Indian commode toilets. During the day, others use the restroom, but at night, it nearly becomes her personal space. However, she doesn’t lock the washroom door before falling asleep. While reporting this news, local news media SCMP mentioned she lacked privacy as the door was kept open but nothing had anything stolen. “I don’t feel unsafe,” Yang was quoted as saying in the news report, explaining that the office is monitored by 24-hour surveillance.
Her story, first reported by the Xiaoxiang Morning Post, has struck a chord with many online.
