Earthquake Update: China has closed its portion of Mount Everest to tourists after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in the Tibet Autonomous Region on Tuesday. This area is also known as Mount Kumolungma. Dingri is home to the base camp of the world’s highest peak. According to local officials, the earthquake was felt in the area at 9:05 am (China time). However, the staff and passengers are all safe.
More than 90 people died
According to the Regional Disaster Relief Headquarters, 95 people died in the earthquake. However, 130 people were injured. According to Chinese media, buildings and hotels in the scenic area were damaged. The Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Cumulanga Station for Atmospheric and Environmental Research is experiencing power outages. However all the facilities are in better condition.
Mount Qomolungma, located on the China-Nepal border, is 8,840 meters high. Its northern part extends to Tibet, which is called China Jijing. According to the forecast of the weather department, the temperature in Dingri ranges between 18 °C to 0 °C. Last year in 2024, 13,764 tourists visited Mount Kumolangama located in the Chinese region. This was double the figure recorded in 2023. Tourists here mainly come from Singapore, Malaysia, Germany and France.
