In a high-octane IPL 2025 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 30, Punjab Kings (PBKS) outclassed Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 4 wickets, chasing down a target of 191 with two balls to spare. With this defeat, CSK became the first team to be knocked out of the IPL 2025 playoff race.

Chennai Super Kings were bundled out for 190 in 19.2 overs. All-rounder Sam Curran played a sensational knock, scoring 88 off just 47 deliveries, smashing 9 fours and 4 sixes. He found support from Dewald Brevis, who contributed 32 runs off 26 balls.

However, CSK’s middle and lower order crumbled under pressure, thanks largely to Yuzvendra Chahal, who delivered a match-turning performance for Punjab Kings. Chahal picked up 4 wickets for 32 runs in his 4-over spell, including a memorable hat-trick in the 19th over, becoming the first bowler in IPL history to take a hat-trick against CSK.

Punjab Kings’ Fiery Run Chase

In response, Punjab Kings showed composure with the bat. Skipper Shreyas Iyer led from the front, scoring a match-winning 72 off 41 balls, decorated with 5 fours and 4 sixes. He was well-supported by opener Prabhsimran Singh, who hammered 54 off 36 deliveries, including 5 boundaries and 3 sixes.

Despite a few hiccups in the middle order, PBKS chased down the target, finishing at 194/6 in 19.4 overs. For CSK, Khaleel Ahmed was the most impressive bowler, taking 2 wickets for 28 runs in 3.4 overs, but it wasn’t enough to prevent their exit from the tournament.

With this defeat, Chennai Super Kings have now lost a critical number of matches and have become the first team to be eliminated from IPL 2025 contention.

Punjab Kings’ balanced performance with both bat and ball, highlighted by Chahal’s hat-trick and Iyer’s composed innings, gave them a crucial win in the race to the playoffs. On the other hand, CSK’s campaign has come to a premature end, marking a low point in an otherwise storied IPL legacy.
