An unexpected incident on board JetBlue Flight 161 shocked passengers and crew at Boston’s Logan International Airport. The flight was scheduled to depart for San Juan, Puerto Rico on Tuesday evening, but before the flight could begin, a passenger opened the emergency gate, causing a panic.
How did the incident happen?
The incident occurred while the aircraft was taxiing, i.e. getting ready for takeoff, on the runway. Meanwhile, Angel Luis Torres Morales, who is a resident of Puerto Rico, suddenly opened the emergency gate located above the wing. The emergency slide was activated as soon as the gate opened.
Massachusetts State Police spokesman Tim McGurk said Morales took the action “without warning.”
What is the taxi procedure?
When an aircraft moves slowly on the taxiway after takeoff or landing, it is called taxiing. During this time the aircraft’s engines remain running, and it is controlled by the pilot. This process is an important part of the beginning and ending of the flight.
Flight delayed due to incident
According to the airline, the flight was delayed due to this unexpected incident. The passengers were transported to their destination through another aircraft.
What was the reason for the incident?
Passengers present at the spot said that all this was the result of a personal dispute. Flight passenger Fred Winn told local media that Torres Morales was arguing with his girlfriend over a mobile phone.
“I think he wanted to see his girlfriend’s phone, but she said no. “He then suddenly stood up, ran through the plane towards the emergency gate and opened it.” Vin said.
Passengers got scared during the incident
There was chaos in the plane during the incident. Vin told that people were shouting, “Stop, stop!” The atmosphere was tense, and many passengers cowered in fear.
The accused was presented in the court
Torres Morales was immediately taken into custody and appeared in Boston Municipal Court in the East Boston Division on Wednesday. He has been accused of obstructing aircraft operations.
Morales has pleaded not guilty, and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 4.
Airline security and future measures
This incident has raised questions on aircraft safety measures. The airline has assured of taking additional steps to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
Such incidents are not only dangerous for passengers but also cause serious disruption to flight operations. The airline industry needs to implement strict rules to prevent such cases.
