The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of the impact of fresh western disturbances for North India from January 4. Due to this, the possibility of rain and snowfall has increased in the Himalayan region and surrounding areas.

According to the Meteorological Department, western disturbance will affect north-west India from the night of January 4.

  • 1 to 3 January:
    There may be rain and snowfall in the western Himalayan region.
  • 4th and 5th January:
    There is a possibility of widespread rain and snowfall.
  • Current Status:
    IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy said that at present the western disturbance has moved away from the North Indian region. This has led to a slight reduction in the cold wave situation, which is now limited only to the Western Himalayan region.

Delhi weather update

The weather in the national capital Delhi remained warmer than normal on Monday.

    The minimum temperature was recorded at 10.3 degrees Celsius, which is 3.5 degrees above normal.
  • Air Quality:
    The air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 178 at 9 am, which falls in the moderate category. However, AQI remained in the poor category at 10 centres.

    There is a possibility of dense fog in the morning and light mist later.

    The maximum temperature is likely to be 18 degrees and the minimum temperature is likely to be 9 degrees Celsius.

Cold wave outbreak in Kashmir

Cold is at its peak due to Chilla-e-Kalan in Kashmir.

  • Gulmarg:
    • Minimum temperature 10 degrees below zero.
    • The cold has created severe conditions at this tourist destination famous for skiing.
  • Pahalgam:
    • The minimum temperature was minus 9.2 degrees.
    • The cold at the base camp of Amarnath Yatra has further declined compared to last night.
  • Srinagar:
    • The minimum temperature was minus 0.9 degrees, which is one degree above normal.
    • The cold has subsided somewhat in the valley, but the danger of snowfall remains.

Chilla-e-Kalan: The toughest phase of winter

The period of Chilla-e-Kalan has started in Kashmir Valley from 21st December.

  • This is considered to be the toughest time of winter, which lasts for 40 days.
  • The valley sees maximum snowfall and cold waves during this period.
