The Department of Psychiatry at SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (SRMCH&RC) has inaugurated a Centre of Excellence for Neuromodulation, offering advanced treatment for conditions such as depression, anxiety, OCD, schizophrenia, headaches, nerve pain, and trigeminal neuralgia, among others.
The centre was officially launched by Ms. Manimangai Sathyanarayanan, Director of SRMPS, in the presence of Pro Vice Chancellor (Medical) Dr. Nitin M. Nagarkar, Additional Registrar (MHS) Dr. T. Mythili, Medical Superintendent Dr. R. Venkatraman, and Head of Department (HoD) Dr. R. Arul Saravanan.
During the inauguration, Dr. R. Arul Saravanan provided insights into the cutting-edge Neurosoft Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) machine now available at the centre. He explained, “Neuromodulation is an emerging therapeutic approach where nerve activity is altered through the targeted delivery of stimuli to specific neurological sites in the body, particularly the brain. This can involve electromagnetic fields, rTMS, electric currents, or drugs delivered directly into the subdural space.”
Dr. Arul Saravanan elaborated on TMS as a non-invasive form of brain stimulation that uses changes in the magnetic field to induce an electric current in specific brain areas through electromagnetic induction. “This technique has shown diagnostic and therapeutic potential in treating various neurological and psychiatric disorders,” he added.
Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Nitin M. Nagarkar highlighted SRM Medical College Hospital’s commitment to integrating the latest technologies to provide world-class treatments for its patients. The Centre of Excellence for Neuromodulation is open to SRM patients and those referred by other medical professionals. It operates from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
