In a landmark move aimed at enhancing passenger convenience, the Bhusawal Division of Central Railway has initiated trials for India’s first-ever onboard ATM facility on the Manmad–Mumbai CSMT Panchvati Express. This pioneering initiative is being undertaken in collaboration with the Bank of Maharashtra under the Non-Fare Revenue (NFR) scheme and marks a significant leap in blending modern banking services with rail travel.
“Manmad Mumbai Panchvati Express, a popular intercity train connecting the two cities. This innovative initiative caters to the needs of hundreds of daily commuters, including advocates, businessmen, and government officials, providing them with convenient banking services during their journey” said an official.
“The idea of installing ATMs on trains was first floated during an innovative Non-Fare Revenue customer interaction meet organized by Bhusawal Division. Responding to this visionary proposal, Bank of Maharashtra submitted a formal plan under the New, Innovative Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme (NINFRIS)” he said.
“Trials are currently underway onboard Train No. 12110 Manmad–Mumbai CSMT Panchvati Express to assess the feasibility and operational efficiency of this unique service. This train consists of a total of 22 coaches and operates daily between Manmad and Mumbai CSMT. It has a total seating capacity of 2,016 passengers, with approximately 2,200 passengers traveling to Mumbai CSMT every day. The ATM facility is accessible to passengers of all classes, as the train is fully vestibule-connected, allowing easy movement between coaches” further added official.
According to an official, ATM is being installed in previously unutilized space within one of the coaches, ensuring no impact on passenger seating or amenities. This initiative is being executed with seamless coordination between the Electrical and Mechanical Departments of Indian Railways.
“Once implemented, this onboard ATM facility will empower passengers to carry out financial transactions during their journey—particularly beneficial for senior citizens, women, and those facing unforeseen needs. The ATM is designed to remain connected to mobile networks for smooth, real-time transactions even while the train is in motion” said official.
“This initiative represents Indian Railways’ ongoing commitment to enhancing passenger experience and innovating beyond traditional revenue models. Bhusawal Division of Central Railway is proud to lead the way and is exploring the possibility of extending such services to other key trains in the near future, making rail journeys more convenient, secure, and passenger-friendly” further stated official.
