Old cases of corruption in judiciary

This is not the first time that a High Court judge has been accused of corruption. Even before this, many judges have been accused of serious allegations:

  1. Justice SN Shukla (Allahabad High Court)

    • In 2019, the CBI registered a case of corruption against him.

    • He was accused of taking economic benefits in exchange for a favorable order to a medical college in Lucknow.

    • Retired in 2020.

  2. Justice Nirmal Yadav (Punjab and Haryana High Court)

    • In 2008, a parcel of Rs 15 lakh cash was accidentally reached the house of Justice Nirmaljit Kaur.

    • It was later claimed that this amount was for Justice Nirmal Yadav.

    • The case is still pending.

  3. Justice Shamit Mukherjee (Delhi High Court)

    • In 2003, the CBI was arrested by the CBI in a land scam of crores of rupees.

    • In favor of a restaurant owner, he was accused of taking bribe in exchange for the decision.

  4. Justice Soumitra Sen (Calcutta High Court)

    • In 1993, he was accused of embezzlement of Rs 32 lakh as a receiver.

    • He resigned in 2011 after the impeachment motion was passed in the Rajya Sabha.

  5. Justice PD Dinakaran (Sikkim High Court)

    • There were allegations of illegal assets and judicial misconduct.

    • In 2011, he resigned due to the possibility of impeachment.

Allegations of corruption affect the image of the judiciary

Such cases question the fairness of the judiciary. The debate has again intensified after the incident of receiving cash at the government residence of Justice Yashwant Verma of Delhi High Court whether the accountability in the judiciary should be further tightened.
