There are many rituals followed in Hinduism. Many religions and castes in India follow different customs and traditions. Also we have different beliefs in different cultural traditions. Believing in something may be called superstition by some. There are many types of things in Puranas and Vedas.

One cannot help but be surprised to know about some of them. Brahmavaivarta Purana is one such. According to this myth, it is believed that snakes do not bite pregnant women. According to Brahmavaivarta Purana, snakes do not go near pregnant women.. Similarly, snakes lose their sight on seeing pregnant women. Let us now know why snakes bite pregnant women according to this legend.

Why do snakes bite pregnant women?

Like humans have senses, similarly snakes also have some senses. Snakes use these senses. Snakes live near them. The senses are as important in the life of a snake as the senses are for humans.

With these senses, snakes can clearly identify whether a female is pregnant or not. The Brahmavaivarta Purana states that snakes recognize the changes in women during pregnancy. Legend has it that snakes identified in this way do not bite pregnant women. Once a pregnant woman did a severe penance to please Lord Shiva. When she was engrossed in Shiva’s penance, two snakes disturbed her penance. Till then she is able to recognize the fetus growing in her womb by the power of her penance.

A pregnant woman curses those snakes who disturb her penance because the child in her womb is of snake caste. He cursed the snakes that when they see pregnant women their eyes will not come and since then, Brahmavaivarta Purana states that when snakes see pregnant women they become blind and do not dare to bite pregnant women . It is also said that pregnant women do not see snakes in their dreams.

What is science saying?

Do not cut a pregnant woman if faith is a reason. There are scientific reasons for this too. There are many changes in a woman’s body after pregnancy. Hormonal changes is one of them. There are some special changes in the body of a pregnant woman. Due to these, there are many changes in the nature, interest and complexion of the woman. It is said that snakes detect these changes in pregnant women with their senses and hence do not go near pregnant women. But the thing to note is that there is no scientific evidence on this.
