Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has granted in-principle approval for implementing a “Cable Car” project in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) on Tuesday. The project survey and preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) will commence soon, with directives issued to the Ministry of Road Transport.
This update was shared by Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik.During a key meeting in New Delhi, chaired by Nitin Gadkari with state transport ministers, Sarnaik met with the Union Minister to propose the “Cable Car” project for the MMR.
He recommended its inclusion under the Parvatmala Pariyojana through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or joint financial collaboration between the Central and State Governments.Union Minister Gadkari emphasized the need for an integrated transport system to minimize travel time from the airport to suburban areas and suggested a comprehensive survey for this purpose.
In response, Sarnaik assured that a holistic transport plan connecting Mumbai’s suburbs to the airport in minimal time would be presented soon.The MMR, spanning from Palghar to Uran-Pen in the Raigad district, is witnessing rapid urbanization. With increasing strain on road, rail, and metro networks, it has become essential to develop innovative solutions like an aerial “Cable Car” service.
Highlighting the significance of the project for the MMR, Sarnaik stated that the DPR would provide detailed insights for its implementation.Sarnaik also outlined the region’s challenges, including rising urbanization, an increasing number of vehicles, limited transport infrastructure, and growing pollution.
