360 km long Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway is going to be built in Bihar, which will make the traffic fast and easy by connecting the major cities of the state. This expressway will play an important role in strengthening the state’s economic development and strengthening the infrastructure.
Construction of expressway got acceptance
The route of Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway has now become completely clear. The project was announced in the Union Budget, and now the process of implementing it has accelerated. It will reach Bhagalpur via Patna, Mokama and Munger. According to reports, the total length of this expressway will be 360 km, which will reduce the distance and travel time of passengers.
Important road projects involved
This expressway is one of the most important road projects in Bihar. It has been included in the Central General Budget 2025-26. The central government had earlier allocated funds for this project in the budget of 2024-25, but there were some controversies about its construction, DPR (detailed project report) and route. In the initial plan, the route was proposed from Buxar to Dumraon, Piro, Arwal, Jehanabad, Nawada to Bhagalpur, but now the new route will pass through Patna, Mokama and Munger.
Which cities will add expressway?
Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway will connect the following cities and towns:
- Buxar
- Patna
- Mokama
- Munger
- Bhagalpur
The existing highway will be upgraded
This expressway will not be a completely greenfield project, but only the old highways will be upgraded. It was clarified in the Union Budget that instead of constructing a new road, the existing roads would be converted into expressways. According to reports:
- This 360 km long corridor has about 280 km already four lane.
- The 78.5 km stretch from Mokama to Munger will be four lane.
- DPR is being prepared for four lane construction in this area.
Estimated cost and budget provision
- Estimated cost to make four lane: Rs 3,750 crore.
- Total allocated budget for various road projects in Bihar: Rs 26,000 crore.
- Estimated cost of Patna-Purnia Expressway: Rs 20,000 crore.
- The project is expected to receive the award by March 2026.
A new three lane bridge will also be built in Buxar
- In the Union Budget, it was announced to build a two -lane bridge between Buxar and Ballia in Uttar Pradesh.
- Now a new three -lane bridge will be built, the estimated cost will be Rs 444.18 crore.
- The tender process for this has already been published.
Use of existing highway for expressway
The following existing highways will be included to build the Buxar-Bhagalpur Expressway:
- Buxar-Ara-Patna Fourlane (NH-922)
- Patna-Mokama-Munger (NH-31)
- Munger-Bhagalpur (NH-33)
However, the expressway will need to be further improved to create an access control (Access Controlled Expressway). According to the central report, necessary measures will be taken to make this four lane route to the expressway.
