Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which is the central government -owned telecom company, may soon start its 5G services in the country. The company has started testing infrastructure for 5G networks in many cities and its official launch is possible in the near future.
Which cities have 5G testing going on?
BSNL has started working on tower sites for testing 5G network in major cities like Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Bhopal, Kolkata, Patna, Hyderabad and Chennai. According to the Business Standard report, the sites in these cities that are being tested are mostly the existing 4G sites, which will be later upgraded to 5G.
Establishment of Base Trancver Station (BTS)
The company has informed that the first step in the direction of 5G rollouts will be set up Base Trenxover stations (BTS). They can be started in cities like Kanpur, Pune and Vijayawada. Currently BSNL has about one lakh 4G towers, which will be fully activated by June 2025 and then converted to 5G.
Launch timeline
TCS Chief Operating Officer N. Ganpati Subramaniam has confirmed that BSNL’s 4G and 5G services will start in 2025, and no changes have been made. Earlier, Union Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had said that by May 2025, BSNL will start 4G network at one million places, and 5G services will be introduced in June 2025.
Government support and funding
The government has also provided adequate funding to make BSNL’s 4G and 5G expansion successful. In February 2025, the government sanctioned an additional amount of Rs 6,000 crore for 4G network expansion. This has made it clear that the government is fully committed to making BSNL competitive compared to private telecom companies.
