The privatization of government telecom companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Metropolitan Telephone Corporation Limited (MTNL) was going on for a long time, but the government has made it clear that both these companies will not be privatized.
Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications Dr. Chandrashekhar Pemmasani gave this information in Parliament. He said that the central government has approved an additional capital expenditure scheme of $ 800 million (about Rs 6,640 crore) for BSNL.

How much did BSNL and MTNL earn?
According to data presented in the Lok Sabha, BSNL and MTNL have earned a total of Rs 12,984.86 crore from Monetization since 2019.
Sources of Earnings:
BSNL received Rs 2,387.82 crore from land and buildings and MTNL received Rs 2,134.61 crore.
BSNL earned Rs 8,204.18 crore and MTNL earned Rs 258.25 crore from mudification of properties like tower and fiber.
BSNL made profit after 17 years
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia recently reported that BSNL earned a net profit of Rs 262 crore in the October-December 2024 quarter.
This is the first chance of BSNL to get profits after about 17 years.
How did BSNL improve?

- 18% more income than Fiber to the Home (FTTH)
- 14% more revenue than leased line services
How did BSNL reduce losses?
In the last few years, BSNL has cut its financial costs, causing the company’s deficit to less than Rs 1,800 crore.
BSNL’s EBITDA (pre-tax income) doubled in FY 2023-24 to Rs 2,100 crore.
Earlier it was Rs 1,100 crore.
