Kolkata: Amid continuous violence over minorities in Bangladesh, BSF on Friday had stopped ‘illegal smuggling’ at the Indo-Bangladesh border at Jalpaiguri district.

According to a media statement issued by BSF, in the area of BOP Chanakya Distt- Jalpaiguri (W.B), 20-25 Bangladeshi miscreants and smugglers were observed 100-150 meters inside Indian territory by BSF party.

“They were trying to take away cattle from the Indian village of Singhpara to Bangladesh in thick fog. Alert BSF party challenged the miscreants but instead of running away they aggressively attacked the sentry with lathis and the BSF official sustained injuries. Using a non-lethal strategy, the BSF party threw a stun grenade and fired PAG to deter them. But miscreants surrounded the BSF party and continued to attack them. There was also firing from the counterpart side. In self-defense, a BSF sentry also fired. Later on, it came to notice that a dead body was lying in Bangladesh side near IB,” read the statement.

The media statement also mentioned that after the event a meeting was held between BSF and Border Guard Bangladesh officials in a ‘cordial atmosphere’.
