Mumbai: In May 2025, banks across various states in India will remain closed for up to 12 days due to national and regional holidays, including Labour Day, Buddha Poornima, and Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti, among others. Experts advise planning financial transactions early to avoid last-minute hassles.

May 1 (Thursday)
May Day (Labour Day)/ Maharashtra Day – Banks are shut in Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Andhra Pradesh. Telangana. Imphal. Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday on account of Labour Day and Maharashtra Day.
May 9 (Friday) – Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti – Banks will remain closed in Kolkata on May 9 on account of Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti.
May 12 (Monday) – Buddha Poornima – Banks will remain closed in Agartala, Aizawl, Belapur, Bhopal, Dehradun, Itanagar, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Shimla and Srinagar on May 12 due to Buddha Poornima.
May 16 (Friday) – State Day – Banks will remain closed in Gangtok on Friday on account of State Day.
May 26 (Monday) – Birthday of Kazi Nazrul Islam – Banks will remain closed in Agartala on Monday to honour the birthday of Kazi Nazrul Islam.
May 29 (Thursday) – Maharana Pratap Jayanti – Banks will remain closed in Shimla on May 29 on the occasion of Maharana Pratap Jayanti.
Depending on the states and regions, banks will remain closed for a number of holidays, including Buddha Purnima and Maharana Pratap Jayanti, among others, under the RBI’s holiday schedule under the Negotiable Instruments Act. Scheduled and Non-Scheduled banks will observe public holidays on the second and fourth Saturdays, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
Despite physical branch closures, digital banking options such as UPI, IMPS, online banking, and mobile apps provide continuous access to banking services like money transfers, bill payments and others. Customers should schedule their bank visits in advance to minimise last-minute rushes or confusion.
