Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) takes regular action against kiosks but is lagging behind in taking action against encroachments of permanent shop owners in city. Encroachments by shop owners are causing heavy traffic congestion, mostly in office hours.

BMC is taking selective action in its anti-encroachment drive in many different commercial areas of the city. But small vendors and stall owners face frequent removals. Most of permanent shops in commercial areas like MP Nagar Zone-2 that have encroached on public spaces are allegedly being overlooked by BMC.

The issue has drawn widespread attention in recent months, as roadside vendors and kiosks report repeated harassment. Their stalls are dismantled or confiscated under the pretext of maintaining vehicle parking area. Meanwhile, several large, permanent shops in MP Nagar Zone-2 can be seen extending their boundaries, covering major portions of the road without facing any consequences. A local told Free Press that BMC had not taken any action against encroachments in this area in the past six months. They only take action when they receive a lot of complaints together and only remove the kiosk, small stalls in the area.

BMC chairman assures of action

BMC chairman Kishan Suryavanshi told Free Press, we take regular action on encroachment in all areas of the city. BMC is now working on a plan to create new hawker corners for small stalls and kiosks. We will now give orders of investigation against encroachments of permanent shops and further action will be taken soon.
