Around 5,000 BMC employees who were engaged in the state assembly elections have yet to resume their duties at the municipal corporation. The delay in their return has caused disruptions in the functioning of various departments. As a result, the civic authorities have warned the employees to return to work within a week or face salary deductions.Officials and employees of local self-government bodies are assigned election-related duties, which include preparing voter lists, handling new registrations, updating electoral rolls, and managing tasks on election day, such as polling and vote counting.
A total of 60,000 civic officials and employees were assigned election duties on the date of voting and counting. Over the past two months, approximately 9,674 of these employees were specifically assigned to election-related tasks. While some have returned to their regular duties, the remaining employees have not, leading to a backlog of work.
This delay has directly impacted the functioning of various civic departments, prompting the BMC administration to issue a directive for the immediate resumption of duties.
