BMC rushes to complete 701-km road concretisation by May 31 deadline | X – @mybmc
Mumbai: With just a week remaining until the May 31 deadline for the ongoing road concretisation work, civic officials are on their toes to ensure timely completion. Senior engineers from the Roads Department have been instructed to conduct field reviews and guide sub-engineers on-site.
In cases of contractor delays, mastic asphalt work will be reassigned to alternative contractors, with the incurred costs recovered from the original contractor, along with a penalty amounting to twice the expenditure.
In the first phase of the Mumbai road concretisation project, a total of 324 kilometers (698 roads) have been undertaken, while in the second phase, 377 kilometers (1,420 roads) are being concretised — making it a total of 701 kilometers of roads.
The BMC aims to to complete 75% of the work in Phase 1 and 50% in Phase 2 by May 31. So far, work on 289 roads in Phase 1 has been completed, while work on 285 roads is still underway. In Phase 2, 101 roads have been completed, and work is ongoing on another 704 roads. The work on 114 roads in phase 1 and 614 in phase 2 is yet to start.
Abhijeet Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), said, “With final finishing works underway, engineers have been warned against compromising on quality. Senior and local engineers must address on-site challenges and ensure tasks like tree pit cleaning, debris disposal, road washing, and installation of thermoplastic markings and cat eyes are completed before opening roads to traffic. Adequate teams must also be deployed to complete footpath and carriageway works on time.”
Bangar held a review meeting with road engineers at the BMC headquarters on Thursday. He instructed officials that if contractors fail to start the mastic asphalt work and secure the roads by May 25, the work should be completed by alternative contractors at the original contractor’s risk and cost. The entire work must be finished by May 31. Additionally, a penalty twice the cost incurred for securing the project site will be imposed on the defaulting contractor.
